Loita Hills Maasai Cultural Trek: A Complete Guide

The Maasai trek most travellers never hear about — six days walking the Loita Hills with warriors, wild camping and a descent into the Great Rift Valley.

The Loita Hills are the Maasai's sacred highlands — a forested range on the edge of the Great Rift Valley that almost no tourists visit. Our 6-day trek walks you across these hills with Maasai guides, sleeping in wild camps and learning a way of life that has barely changed in centuries.

The trek runs in two directions: Maji Moto to Nguruman, or the reverse. Both start from the sacred Maji Moto hot springs and cross the Loita forest, with a visit to a traditional manyatta where you learn beadwork, fire-making and Maasai storytelling. The Nguruman direction finishes with a dramatic descent of the escarpment into the Rift Valley.

Fitness-wise, this is a moderate trek — 5 to 7 hours of walking a day, with donkeys carrying the heavy gear. You only carry a daypack. The biggest reward is not the scenery but the people: you walk with Maasai warriors who grew up on these hills.

From $1,432 USD per person, all-inclusive. The best season is June to October and December to March, when the trails are dry. For the ultimate Kenya adventure, combine it with the Maasai Mara and Mount Kenya in our 14-day flagship expedition.
